How have the threats to civil aviation changed? Is the industry well-prepared to deal with them? And what role does cybersecurity play in this? These topics were discussed on October 8 in Warsaw during the 17th edition of Take Off, organized by Welcome Airport Services. Klaudia Harasim represented oneDynamics at the event.
Aviation safety is a systemic issue
The meeting opened with a conversation between Joanna Sikorska of Welcome Airport Services and Jadwiga Żandarska, Director of the Aviation Department at the Ministry of Infrastructure. The topics discussed there were revisited during the panel discussion “Aviation Security in the New Reality,” moderated by Radosław Wiśniewski. The panel included representatives from Port Polska, Polish Airports, LOT Polish Airlines, Smartwings, Katowice Airport, and the Border Guard.
A clear conclusion emerged from the discussions: aviation safety must be viewed from a systemic, even global, perspective. It is not solely a matter for private entities; the government also plays an important role here. With so many stakeholders involved, communication and cooperation become crucial, especially when it comes to identifying threats. There is also much work to be done in the area of public awareness.
What Do Cyberattacks Look Like?
A separate segment of the meeting was devoted to cybersecurity. Marta Jurkiewicz, a cybersecurity expert at Welcome Airport Services, led a short workshop titled “How Did That Click Happen? What Cyberattacks Look Like.”
This topic was particularly interesting to us. The more processes and systems are moved to the digital world, the more important it becomes not only to consider what technology is capable of, but also how prepared an organization is for situations where things don’t go according to plan.
We would like to thank Welcome Airport Services for the excellent organization, and the speakers for their substantive and informative discussion.
Aviation safety requires a systematic approach and cooperation among many parties, from private companies to the government. As processes become increasingly digitized, the importance of preparing organizations for cyber threats is also growing.
